Sean Claffey

Director

Sean Claffey is a feature documentary director whose mission is to tell the stories of the voiceless and oppressed, shine the light into the darkness, and expose injustice wherever it may be. Raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to an immigrant family, he knows the sacrifice it took for his family to leave their homeland and make a new start. His latest film is about the elite refugee athletes that are the underdogs of the underdogs who give up their flag, country, family, and friends to compete at the highest level at the Olympics.


Claffey spent over two decades working across theater, independent film, documentaries, music videos, and national television commercials. Sean became a highly sought-after Production Designer, collaborating with some of the most respected filmmakers in the world, including Joel and Ethan Coen, Spike Lee, Vilmos Zsigmond, Russell Carpenter, and dozens more. Sean designed campaigns for Fortune 100 brands such as American Express, Nike, Microsoft, HBO, Visa, McDonald's, Toyota, Lucasfilm Ltd., contributing to over 1,000 national TV spots with top

agencies including Ogilvy, Wieden+Kennedy, Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann Erickson, and R/GA. 


After 20 years behind the scenes, Claffey shifted his focus to directing stories that matter. He has since directed ten television pilots, centered on real people making meaningful impact through themes of homelessness, firefighting, ocean rescue, and social service. His recent work includes serving as Creative Director, Director, and Producer for Macmillan Publishing's rebranding into Macmillan Learning, guiding a century-old institution into the digital storytelling era. 


Claffey continues to develop multiple documentary and commercial projects. Sean's first award- winning feature doc, Americonned, tells the story of income inequality and how it destroys lives and destabilizes democracies. He remains dedicated to mentorship and teaching, believing that while technology evolves, the power of a well-crafted story remains timeless.
